I fondly remember singing this simple song as a child.
Twelve men went to spy on Canaan…ten were bad and two were good.
What do you think they saw in Canaan…ten were bad and two were good.
Some saw giants big and tall.
Some saw grapes with clusters long.
Some saw God was in it all.
Ten were bad and two were good.
Back Story
Moses and the children of Israel have journeyed across the desert and have arrived at the staging area, just before the Jordan river. God speaks to Moses and commands him to send twelve spies into the land. Their job was to survey the people and topography…God was preparing his people to cross over and receive their land inheritance!
*The Spies Route to Canaan
Twelve men crossed over to scout out the land and its features. Read through this list and tell me, do you recognize their names? Shamma, Shaphat, Caleb, Igal, Oshea (Jehoshua), Palti, Gaddiel, Gaddi, Ammiel, Sethur, Nahbi, and Geuel. I dare say that you might know two…Caleb and Oshea (who was called Jehoshua or Joshua) but that’s probably all you know. There is a good reason for not knowing!!
The Difference?
Ten men saw giants! Two men saw God’s goodness! The problem with the twelve men that spied out the land wasn’t that they saw different things or went to different places, but that there was a war of ideas raging within the jewish community. A majority of the people lacked the faith to trust God and were driven by their fear of the unknown. A small minority of the people had a strong faith and were willing to stand out with a good report, even though they were in the minority among their peers!
A Culture War!
Our culture today is in the middle of a culture war of ideas! The vast majority of those around us not only lack faith in God’s goodness, many openly reject the existence of God and deny any claims of the such. In this current cultural climate, your family might be in the minority. Don’t let that scare or frighten you! Joshua and Caleb had eyes to see God’s blessings and then stood firm in proclaiming God’s goodness to the culture around them!

Taking a Stand?
Do you stand for a Biblical perspective on marriage?
Do you reject the idea that unborn lives don’t matter?
Is it your belief that Gods’ Word commands you to discipline your children?
Do you believe that all of humanity is created in God’s image and should be treated such?
Are you willing to accept by faith the Biblical account of creation?
Have you taken a stand against pre-marital sexual relationships?
Just as in Numbers 13, the war of ideas rages strong in today’s culture and we need to be bold enough to stand for truth and righteousness! However, that stand must begin in the home! If you are willing to take a stand in culture but are unwilling to teach those Biblical foundational truths to your children, you will have failed in the most important task you have been given…to bring your children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
I Challenge You!
I challenge you to pick one of the topics from the list above and make a distinct effort to teach and train your children in the Biblical Worldview!
Don’t rely on others to teach your children, it is your responsibility!
